Grades 1 - 6

Class Times:
Tuesday, 4:30-5:30 pm or 6:30-7:30 pm

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the Religious Education Program for the school year 2007-2008.
Following are some guidelines and information to assist all of us to have a faith enhancing year. The Catholic Church believes and teaches that parents are "the primary teachers of their children" and all of us are here to support you in your challenge of passing on the faith to your children. It takes a family and a parish to teach the "Good News" and here at Nativity we have both faith-filled families and volunteers. Each week about 50 parishioners will come to Nativity School to serve your children through teaching, aiding, assisting and providing childcare. I know you join me in being grateful for such a gift of time and talent to the children of Nativity!

We look forward to working with you and please be assured that we appreciate your cooperation regarding these guidelines. Our effort is to provide a safe environment, to be aware of your time constraints at pick up time, and, most of all, to assist you in the faith growth of your child/children.
Blessings on you and your family,

Peggy Schrick, peggy@kcnativity.org, Director of Christian Formation

Policies
Absences

Please do not call regarding absences this year, unless there will be a prolonged absence. When the student returns please have them explain their absence to the classroom teacher. When there are duplicate absences we will check with you via mail or phone.

Arrival
We ask that children be dropped off no sooner than 10 minutes before class time. We cannot provide supervision before that time and want no children unsupervised in the meeting areas.

Students who attend classes on the top floor go to the blue tile area (to the right of the entrance) when they arrive.  Students who have classes on the middle level or the lower level meet in the Cafeteria. All students will be met in these areas by their teachers who will accompany them to classes after the bell rings.

For safety reasons no students will be permitted in any classroom unless accompanied by a teacher.

Discipline
For the most part we have very acceptable behavior in our classes. Sometimes there are some breeches. When this occurs teachers are being asked to:

1. Correct immediately with respect.
2. Talk to the student privately if there is a recurrence.
3. Refer the student to the director, if change does not occur.
4. Parents will be contacted by the director to assist with the problem if there is no improvement.

Dismissal
All students who are being picked up personally by a parent or other designated adult will go to the cafeteria. All the rest will go to the front of the school for drive-by pick up. If drivers will pull up to the very end of the sidewalk we can fill 7 cars at each stop. Students will move quickly to the cars when they have all stopped as far forward as possible.
We are asking you to sign up for the way that you will pick up your child in grades 1 - 6 from Religious Education classes this year. If you choose to personally come into the building to get your child you are asked to enter through the cafeteria door on the lower level, (northeast corner) of the school. No children will be allowed to leave that exit unless accompanied by an adult. Teachers will be at the exit for you to indicate who you are taking with you.
Parents picking up in the cafeteria should park behind the church or behind the school. They should exit at the light on Mission Road.
If your child is being picked up in front of the school by the drive by method that will remain the same. With the absence of people coming and going this should assist with a more smooth dismissal. Parents who are driving by should enter the lot at the top of the hill, not at the light, and exit the same way. This is to eliminate a traffic jam with those picking up in the cafeteria.
Please complete the dismissal form and return it to the classroom teacher so that they will know where to have your child for you. Teachers will assist the children no matter which plan you choose. Send a note if there is any change.
Please be patient while we make this work. The safety of your children and the value of your time are two considerations in trying to smooth out the dismissal process.

Early Dismissal
Since classes are for just one hour we discourage early dismissal but when that cannot be avoided we ask that you send a note to the classroom teacher. Your student may be picked up on the upper level only. We ask that parents do not go to classrooms since this is a distraction to the class. If you write a note for them to come to the car by the front door, we will accompany them to you.

Parking
We ask that no one park in front of the school on Tuesdays. You may drop off and pick up but teachers only will park on the north end to allow more room behind the school. Your cooperation is really needed on this one!

Weather policy
We adhere to the Blue Valley School district calendar. If they do not have school on Tuesday or if they dismiss early because of weather conditions we will cancel classes. (This does not apply to early dismissal for teacher in-service!) When weather conditions are threatening we will make a judgment call on whether to cancel or not. The safety of you and your children is our main concern. Effort will be made to notify teachers to call their class list, a message will be left on the answering machine in the office and notification will be posted on our web site.
