On Monday, the Church ended the Christmas season with the Baptism of the Lord and now we enter into Ordinary Time.
Ordinary Time is not unexceptional or undistinguished time, rather it is time that is well ordered according to God’s plan.
The word ordinary is rooted in ordinal, which means to rank or position in a series. God orders all time toward Himself.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops teach us that, “Ordinary Time is a time for growth and maturation, a time in which the mystery of Christ is called to penetrate ever more deeply into history until all things are finally caught up in Christ. The goal, toward which all of history is directed, is represented by the final Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.”
My prayer is that we allow the Lord to order us to His ways. May we remain soft and supple during this season so that we can bend and move toward his will.
