Registration and Deadlines
An announcement is usually placed in the church bulletin and school newsletter in October.  Tryouts are typically held in the gym in the second week of November. A CYO Parent Release Form and a Nativity basketball registration form must be submitted at the time of the tryout.

Participation
Basketball is open to all Nativity parishioners in 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. The basketball coordinator sets up each tryout session (one for each grade), in which skills are objectively evaluated by a third-party individual.  Based on skill level, players are placed on A, B, C or D teams for their grade. Evaluations will be completed during the week, coaches and evaluators will meet on Saturday to assign teams, and team placement and practice schedules will be announced on Sunday. The basketball coordinator is in no way involved in tryout evaluations or team placement.

A special note regarding siblings in the same grade: To be fair, it is not possible to honor requests to have siblings on the same team. However, they can be on the same team if:  1) it is objectively determined through the tryout process (based on skill), or 2) after teams are formed, the student on the higher-level team chooses to move down to his or her sibling’s lower-level team.

Fee
The Athletic Committee determines participation fees each year, which can vary due to new equipment and facility expenses, CYO fees, etc. The basketball fee for 2006 was $85 per participant.

Required Uniforms and Equipment
Players wear jerseys provided by Nativity and the “required” Nativity school uniform shorts.  Players who do not attend Nativity school can purchase the required shorts at Embroid Me (8622 W. 133rd St. 913-897-9600). Other than that, players need athletic shoes and a basketball (Nativity also provides balls to be used during practice).  
 
Practice
Practice is held twice a week beginning in mid-November through January.

Games
Games are played on weekends beginning in December through mid-February. The schedule can be found on the CYO website.

Coaching
Parent volunteers are needed and each must be VIRTUS-trained prior to having any contact with the team. Two coaches are needed for each team.
